Analysis of WCW The Red Wheelbarrow, 261 Words

Red_WheelbarrowThe Red Wheelbarrow relies heavily on imagery to form as a result of the words chosen. The choice and placement of words had to be chosen in such a way that they would catch the reader’s attention and cause them to picture images in their head. For instance the choice of the word glazed at the beginning of the fifth line. WCW could have simply said the wheelbarrow was covered in water; however this does not seem to paint a picture of the wheelbarrow as well. If colorful words are not chosen then the theme of imagery in this poem would not work nearly as well. The first two lines so much depends upon seems to infer that the wheelbarrow is of great importance to the speaker and since the poem is so short one might also suggest that “so much depends” on every word in the sentence to be meaningful. The color red is used to describe the wheelbarrow to aid the reader in picturing the wheelbarrow sitting in the rain. The diction used in this poem is the key to understanding the meaning of it. If you changed the words around even a little bit it could potentially change the meaning entirely. This poem is unique because WCW has taken what would otherwise be a normal sentence and turned it into a poem by using clever diction. Breaking up multi-syllable words helps to elongate the poem and add emphasis to certain lines within it. The author effectively makes an ordinary object (the wheelbarrow) into a piece of art.
